Susan Kehoe, General Manager of Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach, presented the winners of the 2017 Rehoboth Beach Reads Short Story Contest with their cash awards on October 13 at the store. Browseabout sponsors the annual contest, which has been held for five years. This year’s 1st Place Winner is Michael Sprouse (host of the A&E Report).
Receiving the top awards this year were:
1st Place and $500: Michael Sprouse (Lewes, DE) for “Some Girls”
2nd Place and $250: Kathleen Martens (Rehoboth Beach, DE) for “Not in My World”
3rd Place—a tie—splitting $100: Alex Hannah (Washington DC) for “The Stranger and the Horseshoe” and Jackson Coppley (Rehoboth Beach, DE, and Chevy Chase, MD) for “The Bomber Jacket”
Their stories, along with 21 other stories selected by the panel of judges, have been published in the anthology Beach Life. The contest invites writers to submit short “beach reads” that fit the year’s theme. Entries are judged on creativity, quality of writing, suitability as a beach read, and fit with the theme.
Next year’s Rehoboth Beach Reads Short Story Contest will open March 1, 2018. Contest information is posted on the Cat & Mouse Press website (www.catandmousepress.com) and updates are provided on the contest Facebook page: www.facebook.com/RehobothBeachReads.
